Confinement(2019)

Confinement is a documentary film that traces 500 years of Dublin's north inner city, from Henrietta Street to Grangegorman, examining how social control, mental asylums and rehabilitation have evolved across centuries. Using motion graphics, live footage and charcoal drawings based on rare pre-1900 photographs from the National Archives, the film reconstructs the faces and stories of asylum patients long forgotten. Narrated by the imagined voice of a dead artist friend, Tony Rudenko—voiced by Aidan Gillen—Confinement weaves personal memory with institutional history to reveal how Dublin's most vulnerable were confined, treated and sometimes lost to time. A haunting meditation on care, confinement and the city's hidden past.
