Servidão(2019)

Servidão is a documentary that challenges the myth that Brazilian slavery ended with the Lei Áurea in 1888. While many believe the practice vanished, modern forms of labor exploitation persist across the country—an estimated 369,000 Brazilians currently live and work in conditions of servitude. Through interviews with contemporary abolitionists and rural workers who survived modern slavery, the film traces how the mentality of enslavement has remained woven into Brazilian society for five centuries. Servidão exposes the uncomfortable truth that slavery never truly ended in Brazil, only transformed.
