Shades of Life(2014)

Shades of Life is a Hong Kong drama that follows Yu Yang, a retired principal devoted to traditional Chinese culture and family values, as he navigates modern life with his adult children. His eldest son Jack, a magazine editor, often challenges his father's views on social issues, while his much younger daughter Zoie represents the generational divide that troubles Yu Yang as technology reshapes society. Yu Yang's daughter-in-law Elaine holds the household together, but when decisions about their son's education arise, family tensions surface. The series examines pressing concerns for contemporary Hong Kong: education, housing, aging populations, youth competitiveness, mainland relations, and immigration. Through this multigenerational family, Shades of Life explores how tradition and progress collide in a rapidly evolving city.
