Jahrestage(2000)

Jahrestage is a German historical drama series that follows Gesine Cresspahl, a woman living in New York who recounts her family's turbulent past to her eleven-year-old daughter Marie. Set across 1967–1968, the narrative weaves between present-day conversations and flashbacks spanning Nazi Germany, Kristallnacht, and the early German Democratic Republic. Gesine's story encompasses her mother's suicide, her father's wartime espionage for the British and subsequent Soviet imprisonment, and her own struggles with the Stasi alongside her lover Jakob, who both resist state demands. Facing mounting pressure, Gesine eventually flees to West Germany and then America. The series examines how personal trauma and political upheaval shape identity across generations and borders.
