Mastermind(1972)

Mastermind is a British quiz show renowned for its gruelling questions, austere setting and uncompromising atmosphere. Devised by Bill Wright and inspired by his interrogation experiences during World War II, the format remains virtually unchanged: four to five contestants compete in two rounds—one on a specialised subject of their choice, the other testing general knowledge. The show's distinctive tension comes from its ominous theme music, "Approaching Menace" by composer Neil Richardson, and the relentless pace of questioning. Originally recorded in Manchester at Granada Studios and New Broadcasting House, Mastermind relocated to MediaCityUK in 2011. The programme has become a cornerstone of British television, testing both knowledge and nerve under intense scrutiny.
