Die schöne Wilhelmine is a German historical drama following the true story of Wilhelmine Enke, a trumpeter's daughter who becomes the mistress of Crown Prince Frederick William II. Their romance defies the rigid class boundaries of 18th-century Prussia—he is heir to Frederick the Great, she is common-born. To maintain propriety, Frederick William arranges her marriage to a valet while keeping her as his lover, eventually elevating her to nobility as Countess Lichtenau.
