The Village is a BBC drama that follows one English village through the turbulent twentieth century. Created by Peter Moffat, the two-series epic spans 1914 to the 1920s, capturing births, deaths, political upheaval, and social rebellion across a transformative era. The narrative centers on Bert Middleton, who lives through the entire hundred-year period. As a documentarian interviews the second-eldest man in Britain in the present day, Bert's life unfolds through flashbacks—from boyhood through old age—revealing how personal stories intertwine with the seismic historical events reshaping his community. The Village weaves intimate character drama with sweeping historical scope, exploring how ordinary lives are shaped by extraordinary times. Though conceived as a 42-hour televised epic, only two six-episode series were commissioned.
