Designing Women follows four interior designers at Sugarbaker and Associates in Atlanta. Julia Sugarbaker, the firm's owner, is sharp-tongued and commanding, while her ex-beauty queen sister Suzanne is self-absorbed and perpetually chasing wealthy husbands. Mary Jo Shively, a divorced single mother, matches Julia's steel but lacks her confidence. Charlene Frazier-Stillfield, a guileless farm girl from Missouri, rounds out the team with her earnest naïveté. As the women navigate design projects and personal drama, their clashing personalities and conflicting values create both comedy and unexpected warmth. The series balances workplace humor with surprisingly pointed social commentary, anchored by Julia's caustic wit and the genuine bond between these four very different women.
