A Splendid Life in Beijing follows four brothers born into a Beijing hutong family during the Cultural Revolution. After a tragic incident leaves the eldest brother imprisoned, he eventually seeks solitude on the grasslands. The second brother pursues business relentlessly, moving from selling bean sprouts to running a garment factory and trading stocks, driven as much by ambition as by his feelings for a woman. The third brother enters the stock market after graduation and builds his own success under a mentor's guidance, though romantic conflict eventually sends him to Hainan alone. The youngest, born with asthma and a stutter, overcomes his disabilities through determination and speech practice, becoming a postman and finding love along the way.
