Penultimate Instance is a Russian series about two bureaucrats working in the Department for the Distribution of Souls. Twenty-four hours before anyone dies, Maxim and Valentina must decide their eternal destination—heaven or hell. Bound by employment contracts that guarantee them paradise, the pair pursue conflicting agendas. Maxim schemes to sell heavenly spots to wealthy oligarchs for profit, while Valentina obsesses over a chance to retrieve her husband from damnation. The show blends dark comedy with metaphysical stakes, exploring corruption, ambition, and love against a backdrop of cosmic bureaucracy. What begins as a simple administrative job becomes a moral minefield when personal desires clash with cosmic rules.
