Ernani - ROMA(2022)

Ernani is Verdi's 1844 opera, adapted from Victor Hugo's play Hernani. The story follows Elvira, a young noblewoman torn between three suitors: Ernani, a nobleman-turned-outlaw and her true love; Silva, her elderly guardian who desires her for himself; and Don Carlo, King of Spain, who also pursues her. The opera unfolds against the historical backdrop of Charles V's coronation as Holy Roman Emperor. Verdi's genius lies in how he uses the three-man rivalry to showcase three distinct male voices—tenor, baritone, and bass—each expressing different emotional depths. The work became an immediate triumph at La Fenice in Venice, establishing Verdi's skill at transforming historical events into psychologically rich musical drama.
