Shine, Japanese Women(1932)

Shine, Japanese Women is a sports drama following two elite swimmers at Kirishima Girls' School as they train for the Los Angeles Olympics. When Shigeko's father falls ill, she secretly takes a job at a trading company to support her struggling family, forcing her to miss practice. Her friend Midori and their coach Masao urge her to return, but the school soon discovers her secret. Though the principal initially refuses help, the students rally to raise funds for Shigeko's family. At the qualifying meet in Tokyo, Shigeko wins her heat in the 100-meter freestyle, only to learn of her father's death. Grief-stricken, she collapses while Midori, exhausted from her own efforts to help, finishes fourth. Despite their personal tragedies and physical toll, both swimmers earn selection to Japan's Olympic team, their prior achievements securing their place on the roster.
