Marcelo(2012)

Marcelo is a Brazilian comedy about a sheltered man who becomes obsessed with his eccentric neighbor Julio, convinced he's the real-life embodiment of his favorite superhero. Julio's ambition to become a porn star sets him apart from everyone else in their community, and Marcelo sees in him a kind of freedom he's never experienced. His overprotective mother Martha, however, has other plans. She's emotionally dependent on her adult son and refuses to let anyone—especially someone like Julio—come between them. As Martha tightens her grip, Marcelo finds himself caught between his fantasy of liberation and the suffocating reality of his mother's control. The film explores themes of identity, desire, and the complicated bonds that keep us trapped.
