Purcell: Dido and Aeneas(2009)
Purcell: Dido and Aeneas is a film adaptation of Henry Purcell's baroque opera, choreographed and directed by Wayne McGregor for the Royal Opera and Royal Ballet. Based on Book IV of Virgil's Aeneid with a libretto by Nahum Tate, the work explores the tragic romance between Dido, Queen of Carthage, and the Trojan prince Aeneas. As their passion deepens, Dido wrestles with the conflict between her heart and her duty as monarch, fearing that love will undermine her authority. Her attendants counsel that even heroes surrender to desire, yet fate has other plans. McGregor's interpretation blends classical dance with operatic grandeur, creating a visually stunning meditation on power, desire, and inevitable tragedy.
