Ulterior Motive is a crime thriller following wealthy heiress Ye Shuang after her husband and daughter vanish without trace. Desperate for answers, she contacts the police and reconnects with her ex-boyfriend Yao Jie, now an investigator. As Jie digs into the million-dollar ransom demand, he uncovers inconsistencies that point toward Ye Shuang's father, Ye Cheng, whose behavior grows increasingly suspicious. When Cheng dies in what appears to be an accident, a dormant murder case from two decades earlier resurfaces, revealing that the kidnapping is far more sinister than anyone suspected.
