Soft Targets is Stephen Poliakoff's sharp parody of the spy-thriller genre. A paranoid Russian diplomat grows increasingly convinced he's the target of an elaborate Foreign Office conspiracy. As his suspicions deepen, the line between genuine threat and imagined persecution blurs, turning the machinery of international diplomacy into a darkly comic pressure cooker. Poliakoff mines absurdist humor from Cold War tensions and bureaucratic incompetence, subverting spy-film conventions at every turn. The diplomat's spiraling paranoia becomes both tragicomic and unsettling, exposing the absurdity lurking beneath the surface of diplomatic protocol and espionage mythology.
