Les Avatars de la mort d'Empédocle is a documentary about the making of Danièle Huillet and Jean-Marie Straub's 1986 film Der Tod des Empedokles, shot in Sicily near Mount Etna. Assistant cameraman Jean-Paul Toraille captured behind-the-scenes footage on his first video camera during production, then spent 24 years before collaborating with Straub to edit the material into this finished work. Rather than the austere, humourless affair one might expect from such rigorous filmmakers, Les Avatars de la mort d'Empédocle reveals unexpected lightness and joy. The film captures moments of concentration, patient waiting for sunlight, and even slapstick comedy amid the creative process. It's an intimate portrait of two legendary directors at work, blending documentary observation with unexpected warmth and playfulness.
