Apartment in Athens is a 1943 drama set during the Nazi occupation of Greece. When a German officer, Captain Kalter, requisitions the home of the Helianos family, their world collapses. Once a cultured, comfortable household—he an intellectual, she an anxious housewife, their two children caught between childhood and awareness—the family surrenders to Kalter's methodical cruelty. The captain becomes a military god dispensing terror, reducing the Helianos to servants stripped of identity and agency. Their son harbors fantasies of revenge while the family navigates the impossible choice between survival and dignity.
