U3000(2000)
U3000 is an eight-part experimental series that aired on MTV in 2000, created by provocateur Christoph Schlingensief. The show systematically deconstructs television formats and celebrity culture through absurdist games and public spectacle. Schlingensief presents himself as a self-loathing host, guiding struggling families who win subway-based challenges into humiliating on-camera scenarios. Vintage TV personalities like Maria Hellwig and Christian Anders are enlisted to perform compassion toward economically disadvantaged contestants, while a jury of disabled actors from Schlingensief's ensemble provides sardonic commentary. MTV-era bands including Atari Teenage Riot and Söhne Mannheims perform throughout. The series relentlessly mocks broadcast conventions, game-show mechanics, and the exploitation inherent in reality television, turning the medium's own tropes into instruments of critique.
