The Comedians(1971)
The Comedians is a British television series from the 1970s produced by Granada Television's Johnnie Hamp. The show became a launching pad for working men's club and nightclub comedians of the era, featuring performers including Russ Abbot, Frank Carson, Bernard Manning, Tom O'Connor, and Roy Walker alongside dozens of other rising talents. Each episode showcased stand-up routines and sketches that captured the gritty, observational humour of British club culture. The series also featured Shep's Banjo Boys, a seven-piece musical ensemble that provided entertainment between comedy sets. The Comedians gave mainstream television exposure to comedians who had built loyal followings in the circuit, many of whom went on to become household names in British entertainment.
