The People's Court

The People's Court is an American arbitration-based reality court show that pioneered the binding arbitration format when it debuted in 1981. The series originally ran for twelve seasons under retired Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Joseph Wapner, who presided over small claims disputes in a simulated courtroom. After cancellation due to low ratings in 1993, the show was revived and is now hosted by retired Florida State Circuit Court Judge Marilyn Milian, the program's longest-serving arbiter. The People's Court was the first popular, long-running judicial reality series and established a format that countless court shows have since adopted. Before its arrival, television courtroom programming relied primarily on actors and fictional cases. The show's innovative approach to presenting real disputes through binding arbitration fundamentally changed the genre and remains influential in reality television today.
