The Great Merchant(2010)

The Great Merchant is a historical drama based on the true story of Kim Man-deuk, a woman who transformed her life on Jeju Island during the Joseon Dynasty. Adopted by an elderly woman, Man-deuk rises to prominence as a talented gisaeng before abandoning her position to elope with her lover, Jeong Hong-soo. Caught and imprisoned in an epidemic ward for a year, she emerges with a new purpose: caring for sick gisaengs and building a merchant business that restores ethical trade practices across the island. As Man-deuk's influence grows, her former friend Moon-sun grows resentful, viewing Man-deuk's success as a personal threat. The series chronicles Man-deuk's remarkable journey from entertainer to philanthropist, exploring themes of redemption, ambition, and social change in historical Korea.
