Citizen Smith(1977)
Citizen Smith is a classic BBC comedy following Wolfie Smith, an idealistic revolutionary who dreams of sparking a working-class uprising in South London. Played by Robert Lindsay, Wolfie establishes the Tooting Popular Front with a ragtag group of friends, determined to emulate the radical heroes he admires. Yet his grand ambitions constantly collide with reality: his casual approach to leadership and chronic disorganisation repeatedly sabotage his schemes. Set against the backdrop of 1970s Britain, the series mines comedy from the gap between Wolfie's fiery rhetoric and his hapless execution, as his small cadre of supporters struggle to keep pace with their would-be leader's revolutionary zeal. Sharp-witted and affectionate, Citizen Smith captures the absurdity of grassroots activism through the eyes of a charismatic dreamer who means well but rarely thinks things through.
