The Doll(1978)
The Doll follows Stanisław Wokulski, a self-made merchant in late nineteenth-century Warsaw who rises from poverty to wealth through shrewd business dealings and a profitable partnership with a Russian trader. Haunted by his past—including exile in Siberia following a failed uprising—Wokulski becomes obsessed with winning the heart of Izabela Łęcka, a beautiful but vain aristocrat from a financially ruined family. He infiltrates Warsaw's high society, frequenting theatres and salons, and establishes a company with her father as shareholder to secure her affection. Though Wokulski's fortune earns respect, his common origins remain a barrier in aristocratic circles. Izabela eventually accepts his advances, but her feelings lack genuine love or devotion, leaving Wokulski's grand ambitions hollow. This Polish period drama explores class, ambition, and the limits of wealth in matters of the heart.
