The Set is a 1986 Australian drama following Paul Lawrence, a working-class department store clerk with ambitions to study art. When his girlfriend Cara moves to London, Paul becomes the protégé of influential designer Marie Rosefield, gaining entry to Sydney's exclusive art world. Through Rosefield's connections, Paul lands a commission to design a stage set for a visiting British director. Collaborating with art student Tony Brown, Paul finds himself drawn into an unexpected affair. As Paul navigates the competitive art scene and his newfound relationships, the personal and professional worlds collide, threatening the delicate balance he's built. The film explores ambition, desire, and the cost of reinvention within Sydney's vibrant creative community.
