Strange Culture(2007)
Strange Culture is a documentary that follows the true story of artist and professor Steve Kurtz, a member of the Critical Art Ensemble. Kurtz's provocative work examined genetically modified food and the intersection of science and public policy through art. When his wife Hope died of heart failure, paramedics discovered petri dishes and scientific equipment in their home—materials central to Kurtz's artistic practice. Suspicious of the equipment, they alerted the FBI, who arrested Kurtz within hours on bioterrorism charges. The film traces how an artist's legitimate creative work became entangled in post-9/11 security fears, raising urgent questions about artistic freedom, scientific inquiry, and government overreach.
