Tarnation is a documentary that pieces together filmmaker Jonathan Caouette's chaotic childhood through nineteen years of accumulated footage. Using snapshots, Super-8 film, answering machine messages, video diaries, and early short films, Caouette constructs an intimate portrait of growing up with his mother, who struggles with schizophrenia. The film moves between moments of tenderness and crisis, capturing both the everyday texture of their relationship and its darker psychological currents. Rather than impose a linear narrative, Caouette lets the raw materials speak for themselves—a collage approach that mirrors the fragmented nature of memory and mental illness. The result is a startling, deeply personal work that redefined documentary form through its innovative use of found footage and experimental editing.
