Only the River Knows is a documentary film set on New Zealand's remote Lethe River, where two fly fishers' lives intersect across decades. In 1988, legendary angler Lars Lenth spent three months exploring the river's legendary trout waters, documenting his reflections in a journal. Nearly twenty-five years later, young fishing enthusiast Rolf Nylinder discovers Lenth's lost diary while lost in the wilderness, finding in its pages a philosophical guide to the sport's deeper meaning. Accompanied by documentarist Peter Christensen, who captures their struggle to land the river's famously large trout, Rolf becomes increasingly drawn to Lenth's poetic insights. As Rolf grows obsessed with the wisdom of the past, the film explores how two anglers separated by time are brought together by the river itself. Only the River Knows examines fly fishing as both pursuit and meditation, asking what happens when one man's dream collides with another's reality.
