Shades(1982)

Shades is a 1999 science fiction film set in a tower block where the government pacifies restless youth through microchip-enabled virtual reality headsets—the titular "shades." Residents lose themselves in immersive fantasies, their lives reduced to passive consumption. When a 1980s-themed party unexpectedly breaches the carefully controlled environment, ideology and political consciousness begin to seep through the haze of manufactured pleasure. The film explores how technology and state control can suppress critical thought, and what happens when that grip begins to slip. A darkly satirical vision of near-future dystopia.
