The Fair at Sorochyntsi(1939)
The Fair at Sorochyntsi is a Ukrainian folk opera that follows Gritsko, a spirited young man who proposes to Parasya at the Sorochyntsi fair. Her father Cherevik initially approves, but her stepmother vehemently opposes the match, swaying the drunken Cherevik to her side. Desperate and heartbroken, Gritsko accepts a wager from a cunning gypsy: if the gypsy can convince Parasya's parents to bless their union, Gritsko will surrender his oxen. What unfolds is a rollicking tale of scheming, mischief, and the clash between parental authority and young love, set against the vibrant backdrop of a traditional fair. The opera captures the spirit and humour of Ukrainian village life with its blend of romance, comedy, and folk tradition.
