The Day the Sun Fell(2015)

The Day the Sun Fell is a documentary that traces the untold history of a Swiss-Japanese filmmaker's grandfather, a Red Cross doctor who survived the 1945 atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Unable to speak about his trauma before his death in 1991, he left behind only silence. Domenig seeks answers by interviewing surviving doctors and nurses who witnessed the same devastation, piecing together fragmented memories of that catastrophic day. As she gathers their testimonies, the Fukushima nuclear disaster strikes, and the past suddenly echoes into the present. Through intimate conversations with these last witnesses, the film explores how trauma reverberates across generations and how historical wounds resurface when catastrophe strikes again.
