Fierrabras(2007)
Fierrabras is a Schubert opera composed in 1823 yet unperformed for over 160 years until 1988. Set in a medieval world, it draws from La Chanson de Roland and the legend of Eginhard and Emma's forbidden love. The opera weaves together epic adventure and romance against a backdrop of conflict between Christian and Saracen forces. This 2007 live performance from Opernhaus Zürich captures the grand scale of Schubert's ambitious score, featuring elaborate staging and a full orchestra. The work showcases the composer's gift for melody and dramatic storytelling, blending heroic battles with intimate emotional moments. Despite its late premiere, Fierrabras reveals Schubert's mastery of operatic form and his ability to craft compelling narratives through music.
