Deacons for Defense(2005)

Deacons for Defense is a drama inspired by true events in 1965 Bogalusa, Louisiana, where the Civil Rights Act had recently passed but African-American citizens remained oppressed by the local KKK and white power structure. When nonviolent resistance proves insufficient against escalating violence, a group of Black men—many of them war veterans—form the Deacons for Defense, an armed patrol dedicated to protecting their community. The film chronicles how these ordinary citizens took up the responsibility of self-defense when local authorities failed them, confronting the brutal realities of racial terror in the Deep South and the difficult choices required to safeguard their families and neighborhoods.
