The Price of Sugar is a documentary that exposes the hidden cost of a global commodity. On the Caribbean island of the Dominican Republic, thousands of Haitian migrants work on sugarcane plantations under armed guard, laboring fourteen hours daily without adequate housing, water, electricity, or healthcare. Most of the harvested cane reaches American supermarkets. The film follows Father Christopher Hartley, a Spanish priest who mobilizes these dispossessed workers to challenge the powerful plantation owners profiting from their exploitation. Through his grassroots organizing efforts, Hartley confronts systemic inequality and forces uncomfortable questions about consumer responsibility. The Price of Sugar examines the human toll behind everyday products and demands accountability from those who benefit from this labor.
