Erich Wolfgang Korngold - Die Tote Stadt(2012)

Erich Wolfgang Korngold's opera Die tote Stadt stands as one of the composer's most significant works, yet it vanished from stages for decades. Composed in 1920, the opera was branded "degenerate" by the Nazi regime and suppressed. After Korngold fled to Hollywood in 1934, where he became a celebrated film composer, his operatic output fell into obscurity. Die tote Stadt remained unperformed until 1955, when Munich finally revived it. Götz Friedrich's 1983 production for the Deutsche Oper Berlin marked only the fifth major new staging since 1945, reflecting the work's long struggle for recognition. The opera tells a haunting tale set in a city suspended between reality and memory, blending Korngold's lush romantic score with psychological depth.
