The Purple Horizon(1971)
The Purple Horizon is a 1971 Vietnamese war romance that vanished after the fall of Saigon in 1975, only to resurface decades later through restored 35mm prints. Based on a novel by military writer Van-Quang, the film captures an intimate perspective on the Vietnam War from the viewpoint of South Vietnamese civilians and soldiers. Phi, a devoted soldier, dreams of escaping with Lien, a torch singer with 1930s glamour, to an imagined sanctuary they call the Purple Horizon. Their romance unfolds against the backdrop of wartime duty and impossible longing, as Phi grapples with his military obligations while yearning for a life beyond conflict. Digitally restored by Japan's Imagica Lab and now preserved at UCLA's Film and TV Archive, this rare film offers a poignant, rarely seen account of the war's human cost.
