The Lovers is a historical romance set in 337 A.D. during China's Eastern Jin Dynasty. A privileged girl is disguised as a boy by her parents so she can attend an exclusive boarding school—a radical move for her time. There she meets a poor but ambitious young man, and the two fall in love despite their vastly different stations. Their forbidden romance unfolds against the backdrop of strict social hierarchy and gender conventions, as the secret of her true identity threatens to unravel everything. The film explores themes of class, desire, and the courage required to defy tradition for love.
