Cheeni(2020)

Cheeni is an Indian drama following a young working woman forced to abandon her city life when her widowed mother's mental health deteriorates. Diagnosed with brain cancer, her mother has retreated into increasingly erratic behaviour, prompting Cheeni to return to their orthodox Kolkata neighbourhood. Back in the traditional household, tensions flare between the rebellious millennial daughter and her conservative mother as old family secrets surface. Set against the backdrop of Manicktallah's rigid social customs, the film explores the collision between modern values and tradition, charting how grief and illness reshape their relationship. Unexpected revelations emerge as Cheeni navigates caregiving, duty, and her own identity within the constraints of her neighbourhood's watchful eye.
