Archangel is a war film set during the 1919 Allied intervention in Arkhangelsk, following Canadian soldier Lt. John Boles as he navigates the chaos of the October Revolution. After a Russian family takes in the one-legged officer from the freezing streets, Boles becomes entangled in a painful case of mistaken identity when he encounters a local woman who resembles his presumed dead lover. The film explores themes of displacement, longing, and the human cost of political upheaval through Boles's fractured perspective. Caught between duty and desire, he struggles to distinguish memory from reality amid the brutal backdrop of revolution and foreign occupation. The dysfunctional household becomes a microcosm of a nation torn apart, where personal tragedy mirrors the larger historical tragedy unfolding around them.
