Twenty Years Later(1984)

Twenty Years Later is a documentary that captures Brazil's turbulent transformation through the lens of one unfinished project. Filmmaker Eduardo Coutinho began shooting in the Northeast in 1964, only to have the military coup force him to abandon the work. Seventeen years later, he returned to the same locations and sought out the original participants, documenting how their lives had changed under Brazil's authoritarian regime. The film becomes a portrait of a fractured family struggling to reunite after the murder of their patriarch, a rural activist who fought for peasants' rights. Coutinho's return journey reveals both personal loss and the broader scars left by political violence on a community.
