Ceddo(1978)
Ceddo is a historical drama set in 17th-century Senegal that explores the collision between traditional African culture and external religious and commercial forces. When King Demba War converts to Islam, the Ceddo people—determined to resist forced conversion—kidnap his daughter, Princess Dior Yacine, as an act of defiance. The film examines the tension between preserving ancestral ways and the mounting pressures of Islam, Christianity, and the transatlantic slave trade that threaten to reshape West African society. Director Ousmane Sembène crafts a powerful meditation on cultural identity, religious coercion, and resistance, using the kidnapping as a catalyst to interrogate colonialism's deeper roots in Africa.
