Lucerna(1938)

Lucerna is a silent film that follows a restless young princess who grows fascinated by a rebellious miller living in an old mill with his mother and ward. When the miller refuses to attend her welcoming ceremony, the princess becomes intrigued rather than offended. She discovers that local custom grants him a peculiar obligation: to light her path with a lantern whenever she ventures to her forest castle. The princess seizes this opportunity to draw the miller closer, using his duty as a means to pursue her interest in him. What begins as aristocratic whimsy evolves into something deeper as the two navigate the class divide between them. Lucerna captures the tension between duty and desire against the backdrop of rural tradition and courtly privilege.
