No Control(2007)
No Control is a Brazilian film that blurs the line between theatre and reality. Eduardo Moscovis plays Danilo, a stage director consumed by the historical injustice of Manoel da Motta Coqueiro, a nineteenth-century farmer whose case helped abolish capital punishment in Brazil. When a mysterious woman urges him on, Danilo stages an unconventional production, casting himself as Coqueiro and psychiatric patients in the remaining roles. As the boundaries between performance and lived experience dissolve, Danilo inhabits his character's tragic fate firsthand, acutely aware of the doom awaiting him. The film examines Brazil's death penalty through an unsettling psychological lens, populated by eccentric characters and unexpected narrative turns that challenge how we understand justice and history.
