The John Forsythe Show aired on NBC from 1965 to 1966 as a genre-shifting sitcom that became a spy series mid-season. John Forsythe starred as John Foster, an Air Force veteran who inherits a girls' school in San Francisco from his aunt. Elsa Lanchester played the principal, with Ann B. Davis as a PE teacher and Guy Marks as Foster's aide. The cast included young actresses like Pamelyn Ferdin, Darlene Carr, and Peggy Lipton as students. When ratings flagged, the show pivoted: Foster was recalled to active duty as a secret agent, and the school setting was abandoned. Only Forsythe and Marks remained as regulars. The series ran twenty-nine episodes, produced by Forsythe's own company alongside Universal Television, with Earl Bellamy directing. The abrupt tonal shift reflects the network's struggle to find its audience during a single season.
