Grassroots is a South African series following two boys from rural Eastern Cape who leave home to attend boarding school in Johannesburg, chasing dreams of rugby stardom. Uprooted from their communities and thrust into a competitive urban environment, the pair must navigate the pressures of elite sport, cultural displacement, and the weight of expectations from those back home. The show explores the tension between ambition and belonging, capturing both the exhilaration and isolation that comes with pursuing athletic excellence at a young age. As they compete for places on the school team, personal rivalries, class differences, and homesickness test their friendship and resolve. Grassroots balances sports drama with intimate character study, examining what it costs to chase opportunity far from where you come from.
