Everybody Hates Chris follows a Black teenager navigating life as the eldest of three children in 1980s Brooklyn. Uprooted to an unfamiliar neighborhood and bused two hours daily to a predominantly white middle school, Chris battles culture shock, racial tension, and the typical chaos of junior high while his strict, hard-working parents expect him to keep his younger siblings in line at home. The series balances comedy with the real struggles of adolescence, capturing the friction between Chris's working-class family values and the isolation of being one of few Black students in his school. His journey explores identity, belonging, and the weight of responsibility placed on the oldest child.
