Sounds Black is a documentary series that traces the origins and cultural impact of Black music in Canada. Directed by filmmaker Cazhhmere and featuring interviews with Canadian music icons including Kardinal Offishall, Jully Black, Fefe Dobson, Maestro Fresh Wes, Deborah Cox, and Keisha Chante, the series charts Black Canadian music from its diasporic roots to international prominence. The documentary explores the evolution from early jazz and gospel through the fight for mainstream radio access and venue representation, the emergence of Canadian hip hop, and the rise of homegrown superstars like Deborah Cox, The Weeknd, and Drake. Sounds Black examines both the triumphs and systemic obstacles that have shaped the Black Canadian music scene, telling a distinctly Canadian story of artistic resilience and cultural influence.
