Graffiti Rock(1984)
Graffiti Rock is a hip-hop television program that premiered on June 29, 1984, on WPIX in New York and across 88 markets nationwide. Created and hosted by Michael Holman, manager of the legendary New York City Breakers, the show functioned as a hip-hop answer to dance television staples like Soul Train and American Bandstand. Though intended as an ongoing series, only one pilot episode aired, yet it drew strong Nielsen ratings. The episode featured Run D.M.C., Kool Moe Dee, Special K of the Treacherous Three, DJ Jimmie Jazz, and the NYC Breakers fresh off their Beat Street success. Debi Mazar and Vincent Gallo appeared as dancers. A segment from the broadcast was later sampled on the Beastie Boys' 1994 album Ill Communication. Graffiti Rock has since become essential viewing for hip-hop historians, ranked alongside classics like Wild Style and Beat Street.
