Crossroads(1964)

Crossroads is a British soap opera that aired on ITV from 1964 to 1988, following the daily dramas of staff and guests at a fictional motel near Birmingham. Created by Hazel Adair and Peter Ling, the series became notorious for its low-budget production values, especially during the 1970s and 1980s, yet developed a devoted cult following. Produced first by ATV and later by Central, Crossroads captured the messy, unglamorous reality of British life with an unflinching eye. The original theme tune by Tony Hatch gained unexpected cultural cachet when Paul McCartney & Wings covered it on their 1975 album Venus and Mars. Carlton Television attempted a glossier revival in 2001, though it lasted only two years. The series remains a touchstone of British television history, embodying both the ambitions and limitations of daytime drama production.
