Solid Gold aired Saturday evenings and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, though critics were divided—The New York Times dismissed it as "the pop music show that is its own parody," noting the dancers' elaborate routines often bore little connection to the songs themselves. The series evolved over its eight-season run, eventually rebranding as Solid Gold '86/'87 and later Solid Gold In Concert to emphasize live performances.
